DESCRIPTION
Evolution Powersports is proud to offer the first factory ECU implementation of Rolling Launch Control for the Maverick R. Before we get into the details of how it works, we want to give a brief overview of Rolling Launch Control, what it is used for, how it is different from the factory anti-lag, and why you need it.
If you look at YouTube videos of GTRs or Lambos when they do a roll-on race, you will see them backfire a few times during the countdown before they take off. This gives a huge advantage to any turbocharged vehicle because it allows you to build boost while maintaining a certain ground speed before the race starts. For example, if you are racing up Oldsmobile hill in Glamis, or Sand Highway, roll-on races are typical. In these racing situations, EVP Rolling Launch would allow you to build 20lbs of boost in the charge tube during the 1, 2, 3, so once the race starts, you shoot out into the lead vs a Non-Rolling Launch-equipped vehicle. There are other unique situations where an offroad vehicle can be used, which greatly expands the fun factor of the vehicle. For example, many riders love to do wheelies, especially in the dunes. A proper wheelie needs the right combination of a roller and power just at the right time. Rolling launch enables you to crest a roller at a specific speed and gear while pouring on the power at just the right time to get the front wheels off the ground and carry them.
People may say they already have factory anti-lag and ask what the difference is between anti-lag and rolling launch control. Well, anti-lag is an ECU strategy where there is an ignition cut and a single cylinder ignition retard which keeps the turbo from spooling down fully in off-gas pedal situations as well as reducing the spool time to go from idle RPM to full boost. It is not designed to produce positive pressure in the charge tube. EVP Rolling launch is an additional ECU program that is designed to produce between 20-22 PSI of boost in the charge tube while maintaining an engine RPM when you want to use it. Think of it as launch control that is used while the car is in motion.
Why customers need this is because our testing has consistently produced quicker time to RPM and time to MPH vs non RLC. This has been tested both in the field and on the dyno by measuring the time from 5500 RPM to 7500 RPM and MPH one second after releasing RLC vs stabbing the pedal. The testing was done on the same car with the same tune in Sport+ (anti-lag mode). When EVP Rolling Launch was enabled, the Maverick R was consistently 1-2 tenths of a second faster to get from 5500 to 7500 RPMs and approximately 5 MPH faster one second into the run. This is an incredible advantage and will allow you to get out there and win races.
EVP's Engineers and Racers created a custom program that retards the ignition on all three cylinders while providing an ignition cut to keep the engine RPMs within a narrow window. To engage rolling launch, typically you would be in manual, in either 2nd or 3rd gear, in Sport or Sport+ mode with the engine RPMs between 5000 and 5500. To engage RLC, you would either press the EVP steering wheel mounted button (available HERE) or press the brake pedal enough to light up the brake lights, then quickly press the gas pedal to the floor – you must be at 100% on the gas pedal to engage. It only requires about 1 to 1.5 seconds to build 20+ PSI of boost, so you would typically engage RLC on the #2 count of 1,2,3. Rolling Launch is an add-on tune available for both the Maverick R and Maverick R MAX. Now get out there and win some races!
OPTIONAL Launch Control Button:
EVP's Steering Wheel Launch Button takes the fun-factor to another level with instantaneous responsiveness. Release the button and accelerate like a bat outta hell!
